Heartworm Disease Testing A
simple blood test called an occult heartworm test can detect a few as 2-3
worms in heartworm positive dogs. Most veterinary clinics require this
test yearly and certainly before putting your dog on a monthly heartworm
preventative. NOTE: This test only detects adult heartworms.
If your dog has been infected by a mosquito within 6 months (the minimum
age of an adult heartworm) of the test, your dog may become positive
later.
